Thomas Pynchon is one of many eccentric author's that has a cult following. People just love this man and his secrecy (I heard that he once jumped out a window to avoid an interview). His paranoia, conspiracies, imagination, and jokes influence every page of The Crying of Lot 49.
It's hard for me to even come up with a short summary of this novel without giving too much, or not enough, away. The main character is a woman named Oedpa (take that, Freud) Maas. She seems to uncover and believe or stumble upon coincidences that lead to a conspiracy theory about a secret postal service that uses garbage cans as mail boxes. Pynchon pokes fun and uses Freud, Americans, postmodern art, the beatles, Nabokov, California, and pop culture references from the 60s.
I know this sounds like something between crazy and too literary, but trust me when I say it is an interesting and fun read. It's even better if you're OK with a book that makes fun of you a little (we all have conspiracy theories, am I right?). You might like it so much that you'll join the Pynchon club and get a tattoo of the conspiracy postal service symbol:

Heeeeyyy, we can be film photography friends! I love film so much. I miss the dark room though which is part of the reason I haven't shot film in awhile: I cant trust the people at walgreens. Anyways, thanks for stopping by my blog. You have a nice little spot over here. I'm interested in your work.
Cool! I need to read this book and I so badly want to enter in this National Novel Writing Month...sounds like a fantastic way to keep up with my writing! :) -Lo
